When planning out your outdoor patio lighting scheme, the first thing you need to take into consideration is your steps. If you have steps, this is really the thing that you must show off first. Think about it for a second. If you have beautiful outdoor patio lighting installed but don’t have lights around your steps, it sort of defeats the purpose. For safety reasons, the steps should be one of the first things that your guest see as the walk up to the house. So, install the lighting in a way that your front steps are really lit up. It just makes for a safer area during the hours of darkness.
If you do have a porch, the next thing to plan is to light up the porch. Outdoor patio lighting will help bring out the porch in front of your home. It will also provide you with ample lighting when you are entertaining or just sitting out in your favorite chair. My family and I pretty much live on our front porch during the summer an fall months. Our outdoor patio lighting really comes in handy when we are enjoying the weather (before the winter comes at least).
There are a few options you have when buying outdoor patio lighting. You can actually buy lights that will automatically come on when the sun goes down. The way it works is that there is a sensor in the lighting unit. On some of the higher priced lights, you can actually set the sensor to automatically turn the lights on when you want them too (think at dusk rather then total darkness). Others will just automatically turn the lights on as it gets dark, and then turns them off as the sun goes off. These are the type we have and I really love t. You never have to worry about turning the lights on (I would always forget) or more importantly, turning the lights off in the morning. This will save you on that monthly electric bill. So in the long run, it is better to go with a more expensive type of outdoor patio lighting as it will pay for itself with the savings in electricity. If cost is really an issue, then just go with some of the cost effective brand of lighting. Once you have some more money in your budget for outdoor patio lighting, then possibly upgrade as you see fit.
Whether you are buying online or at the local home improvement store down the street, just make sure that you price shop. There are so many different styles and brands of outdoor patio lighting that you can really get a good deal if you look hard enough.

I have recently added a light like this. I actually put the outdoor post lights along my walkway. What I did was buy 4 of them. I placed them starting at the beginning of my walkway and driveway. The first one was place right where they meet. I then measured out the rest of the difference to my front door and marked the ground so that it was spaced evenly. I then put in the outdoor post lights right where I had marked the ground. During the evening hours my front yard is light up brightly and really shows off the house great. It will also add quite a nice setting as your guest pull up to visit.
Now, you can buy electronic outdoor post lights, but I would not suggest these at all. You really should go for the solar sensing type. These actually have a sensor that is installed on top of the light holder. As it starts to get dark outside, the lights will come on automatically. Not only is this more practical then electric lights, but it will also save you on electricity as well. So go with the solar outdoor post lights as they are a much better buy for your buck.
You can also have your selection of styles. If cost is a concern, then I would go with a few of the little 6” outdoor patio lights. You can place these along a sidewalk and they will service it’s purpose to add light when someone is walking up. If you have a few more dollars to spend, then go with one of the 6 foot (approximate size) outdoor post lights. These are really classy and give off quite a bit of lighting. What I actually have done is use a combination of both. In the middle of my yard I have one of the taller outdoor post lights while along y walkway, I have the smaller ones. I think it really looks nice. A couple of my neighbors really liked the look of the front yard and they have actually started to install outdoor post lights in their own front yard. It really makes the neighborhood look nice with everyone sprucing up their front lawns.
So get out to your local home improvement store and start shopping for the many different outdoor post lights that are available. Just make sure that you are shopping around enough to get the best price available. Also, don’t discard the notion of buying online as that is where some of the best deals are at.

There are many ways to add flavor to your backyard party. How about a Tropical island party theme? You can start with a tiki bar as well as some torch lighting. If you really want to take it to the next level then try adding outdoor party lighting around the bar. Just like they would do in the Caribbean. Your guest should love it and you will be the hit of the summer.
If that trip to Mexico is still fresh in your mind then how about a Mexican Fiesta style party. Besides the great food and drink, you really need to set the mood for your guest. Adding colorful outdoor party lighting will do just that. For a Fiesta theme, I would stick to more colorful lighting rather then just plain white lights. The more colorful the better for this theme.
Now before you go out and break the bank on just outdoor party lights. Please remember that in order for your party to be a huge success that you intend it to be, then there is more to buy the just the outdoor party lights. Think of redoing the bar as well as some of the other patio furniture. Also, if you don’t have the alcohol or food, you will need to buy that. Also, if your BBQ grill just isn’t cutting it, that might be another item that you need to buy. So sit down and write down everything that you need for your party and budget accordingly. Just don’t forget about the outdoor party lighting.
Don’t go for the cheapest lights either. While you really can get carried away with your outdoor party lighting ideas, you really don’t want to get the cheapest style. Remember, you want to re-use these lights year after year so if you don’t get good, quality lights, then they probably wont last past this summer. You can really do a good job of comparing prices by starting online. Go to the many outdoor party lighting suppliers that are out there. If you think you can get a better deal at one of the major home improvement stores in your area. So whatever deals that you can find will be better for you. What I usually do is search for outdoor party lighting online first. Then, I will go out to my local stores and compare prices. Just remember not to forget about shipping if you plan on buying your outdoor party lighting for one of the many great websites out there.
Probably the best way to distinguish your party from your neighbors is by adding outdoor party lighting. Your guest will be so impressed and they will be talking about your get together for years.

Outdoor string lighting is pretty simple to describe. It basically is what the titles entitles, it is lights on a string. The best way to describe them is that it is a power cord run down the middle, with lights attached to it. The way the outdoor string lighting is designed, it makes for easy installation as well as tare down when you are ready to put them up for the season.
Installing outdoor string lighting is pretty simple. All you need are lights, and extension cord and a staple gun. Place the lights where you would like and then use the staple gun to attach it to your home. Be very careful not to have the staple go through the wires. This will cause a short or even possibly a fire later on. Just make sure that you buy the correct staples for the gun you are using. Another thing to consider before you start putting up you outdoor string lighting is the design you want achieve. One thing that I always suggest to people is to do the layout on paper prior to climbing up the ladder. This will help you ensure that you are only putting up the outdoor string lighting once rather then numerous times. One thing that I actually do is take a picture of my house, then, draw what type of lighting that I am going to put up, right on the picture. If you are good at graphic design, you could actually put up a mock layout before getting started. If your wife is anything like mine, you can just show her the mock design and then have her tweek it. Once again, better to do the job once then 3 or 4 times.
One thing that you will need to decide is what color lights are you going to put up. During summer months, when I am entertaining a lot out in my back yard, I usually put up white or clear outdoor string lighting. I’m a simple person and really use the lights to add more brightness during the summer evening hours. Now, during the winter months or at Christmas time, I really like a lot of colors. I usually put colored outdoor string lighting around my house. I then use white and put them in my trees to act as a XMAS tree. It really does look nice. Don’t be afraid to experiment and adjust as needed. Once you get a layout you like, you can stick with it year after year.
Don’t overspend on your outdoor string lighting. While it is real easy to go all out when hanging them, you really don’t want to be too tacky. So stick with the design you are looking for and stick to it. You will be so happy how your house looks when your outdoor string lighting is installed.
